Programmable Kirigami

The Sabin Lab is an experimental design lab based in Ithaca, NY that explores the intersections of architecture and science. The lab specializes in computational design, data visualization, and digital fabrication, applying insights from biological and mathematical theories. Clients include Nike, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Exploratorium.

Kirigami is an ongoing project investigating programmable cuts and folds at three scales:  the micro-level (DNA origami), the human scale (self-folding material), and the macro-level (a kinetic facade). From 2017-2018 I collaborated with a team of architects and biologists to reimagine self-folding architectural structures with DNA hydrogels.
